Bringing business idea into clarity helps ensure success

Horace M. Lukens IIIOne of the major frustrations for the new entrepreneur is how to make sense of the conflicting advice that is given regarding an idea for a startup business.  Sometimes the entrepreneur is influenced by the last person he or she talks to.  This is not good.  There must be a better way to approach an entrepreneurial "dream."  Based upon my experience as an entrepreneur and in teaching the financial aspects of this subject, here are some thoughts that might clear the cobwebs to enable you to think clearly about your new idea or business startup.

What is there that I don't like, am troubled about or am unsatisfied about regarding my idea or startup plan?

This is not negative thinking, but it is the INTENT of the question to steer you to look at the idea from a more practical point of view.

In other words, how can I improve my concept?  That's a positive view.

What do I plan to do about it?

This question is where procrastination rears its ugly head.  Maybe more in-depth research is needed about some of the details of your plan.

Maybe you need to study what your competition is doing.

Maybe you need to step back and look at your own motives for venturing into a startup.

The point is that you need to take a hard look at the venture to find the merits and flaws in the plan.

How can I improve my plan?

How can I make it grander, worthy of my unlimited potential and a magnificent reality?  It's hared to get excited about an ordinary or mediocre plan.

But if your plan is a real challenge, then you will become enthusiastic and passionate.  These two emotions then propel you forward to an improved concept for your enterprise.

Am I willing to pay the price?

If you are not willing to expend energy, work or the effort to accomplish your entrepreneurial dream, then you are barking up the wrong tree.

Once you are committed, any obstacle can be overcome.

What is stopping me from getting what I want?

Write down all the obstacles you can think of.

Take a hard look at your list.  Now understand that none of the items on your list is holding you back.

It is only your BELIEF that they are blocking your way that has stopped you.  Use this question to give up self-limiting beliefs.  Get into the habit of saying "I can do this!"

When will I begin?

One of my good friends answers this question "you begin by beginning."

Shifting from daydreaming to ACTION requires real discipline and tenacity.  Put your blinders on.

Start NOW.

Why do I want it?

In your mind's eyes, you need to run TO your goal, not away from what you don't want.

This question helps you to remain focused on what you want, which are the benefits of your entrepreneurial dream.

Can I see it in my mind's eye?

Let your subconscious mind take over to allow you to see the ultimate fruits of your entrepreneurial labors.

Use the power of your imagination and begin to program yourself for success in your venture.

Norman Vincent Peale had it right when he titled his famous book "The Power of Positive Thinking."  Maybe all of us should take time to read this classic again.
